Gr.5 Informational Packet ( Really, Really Important Stuff! )
Dear Parents/Guardians, August
Welcome to 5th grade! I will be your child’s fifth grade teacher this year. I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year working with you and your child. You are the most important people in your child’s life, and parental support is critical in your child’s success at school. I believe that your child receives the best education possible when we work together as a team.
Enclosed with this letter are copies of my Homework and Discipline guidelines and the school-wide PBIS Matrix of Expected Behaviors. Please read these carefully. They explain many expectations for you and your child this year. I need your support, and I need you to also let your child know that you support these rules and guidelines.
I will be keeping in touch with you all year long through newsletters, notes, phone calls, and messages on graded papers or in assignment notebooks. Please do the same with me. I welcome your questions and comments. Any time you have something to discuss, please write me a note, email, or call. I will respond as quickly as possible.

HOMEWORK AND DISCIPLINE
1. The students fill out assignment notebooks Monday through Friday. First quarter, these are to be signed nightly by a parent/guardian after homework is completed. This is to make you aware of the assignments that should have been completed. Please check over your child’s work to make sure it is neat and complete before signing the assignment notebook. (Homework does not have to be 100% accurate.) Sometimes a teacher will jot down a short note for the parent/guardian in the assignment notebook. Please check for those too.
2. Assignments are used as a reinforcement of the skills taught in class. An average fifth grader may have 30 – 50 minutes of assignments each night in addition to novel reading. On nights when written work is light, students should spend time reviewing (spelling words, science and social studies terms, etc.) to prevent cramming the night before a test. At this level, some students are also still learning to organize and manage their class time wisely. Therefore, it may be necessary for them to complete class assignments at home.
3. Since assignments are used as a reinforcement of the skills taught in class, it is sometimes not possible to fulfill requests in advance for assignments during vacations. Every effort will be made to ensure that your child understands the skills needed in order to continue his/her academic progress upon returning to school.
4. Unless stated, assignments are always due the next class day. It is expected to be done neatly and as directed by the classroom teacher. If your child was not able to complete his/her assignments, please send a note with your child to the specific teacher of the subject. If your child did not complete the assignments because he/she did not understand what to do, please point out where in the assignment your child began to experience difficulty. If assignments did not get completed due to a family emergency, let us know that, too.
5. A minus sign on midterm or progress reports in the Homework area reflect three or more missing or incomplete assignments for that quarter or that assignments are consistently being done poorly. Check your child’s assignment book daily since teachers often note in the assignment book which assignments are missing or incomplete.
6. Projects and long-term assignments are assigned in advance according to the nature of the subject. Teachers will attempt to see that long-term assignments/projects in different subjects are not due on the same day.
7. Notes and examples are to be copied from the board for future reference. Notes should be kept in the class spiral. After an absence, it is the child’s responsibility to obtain the missed notes. If a child has been absent for several days, a photocopy of the notes to be written in his/her spiral will be made upon request.
8. Students receive three to seven days advance notice of tests. All tests will be sent home with the Updates on Mondays. All papers need to be signed and returned by FRIDAY.
9. All assignments receiving a D (1st & 2nd quarters) or an F (all quarters) may be corrected and returned for a higher grade ( below 75% 1st Q, below 70% 2nd Q, below 65% 3rd & 4th Quarters ) only if completed correctly, neatly, and on notebook paper!
10. Students experiencing difficulty may make arrangements with the specific teacher for additional help. Teachers are available at 8:20 a.m. or immediately after school.
11. Students coming to class without the proper textbook, workbook, spiral, assignment book, or supplies will be subject to classroom consequences and may result in a minus sign on their progress report for that quarter.
12. Questions regarding homework, class assignments, or other concerns should be addressed directly to the teacher of that subject area (i.e. music teacher, recess supervisor)
13. Each student should be using the school-provided “Green Folder”. A “Desk Folder” should hold notebook paper and important classroom resource sheets. The Green Folders have important notes which should be checked daily by a parent/guardian. The other pocket is for assignments and notes that MUST BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL.
14. Classroom rules are posted and discussed and are expected to be followed at all times. Attached is a copy of the PBIS/Mustang Musts – A Matrix of Expected Behaviors which the entire school follows. Rewards include, but are not limited to, praise, mustang money, prizes, and school-wide celebrations. Consequences include, but are not limited to, verbal warnings, infractions on the PBIS Behavior Chart, detentions, and suspensions.
15. Tests and Study Guides are very important learning tools. They let the students and parents/guardians know what will be covered on the test. Parents/guardians should make sure their child reviews the material and only then, sign the study guide. If a student returns the study guide signed by a parent/guardian on the day of the test, he or she will get 3 points extra credit added to the final percentage grade of the test.

ABSENCES
When you call your child in absent, it is wise to also request homework. Homework may be picked up by a parent/guardian in the office between 3 – 4 pm. However, I have also asked students to choose a “Study Buddy” who could bring their homework and notes home when they are absent. This can be a sibling or neighbor who also attends NW. All work sent home is not expected to be completed that evening, but it is nice to be able to look over what was missed. A copy of notes taken throughout the day for each subject may also be given to an absent child. When absent, a student is expected to eventually make up all work that was missed.
